In June 1997, the Government of India launched the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) with focus on the poor. Under the TPDS, States were required to formulate and implement fool proof arrangements for the identification of the poor for delivery of food grains and for its distribution in a transparent and accountable manner through Fair Price Shops (FPS).

Over the years, PDS has become an important part of Government’s policy for management of food economy in the country. BPL & Aantodaya Anya Yogana (AAY) beneficiaries are targeted with a motive to ensure food security as well as upliftment of their economic status, the PDS concerned with these targeted section (BPL & AAY) is known as TPDS.
